Friday night on VH1 the grand finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 9 will air and we’ll finally find out whether Peppermint, Sasha Velour, Shea Coulee or Trinity Taylor is America’s next drag superstar. Last week at the reunion, fan favorite Valentina beat the 13 other queens to become Miss Congeniality of the season and host RuPaul Charles dropped a bomb on the girls with news that the four finalists will compete in a sudden death lip synch smackdown to determine a final two.
All season we’ve been asking you to predict who you think will win “RuPauls Drag Race,” and below I break down the final odds for each of the four remaining queens as well as reveal the results of this week’s poll: “Who do you WANT to win Season 9?”
Peppermint – 2/1 odds of finishing 4th: In the last regular episode of the season Peppermint was our prediction to finish 4th, a spot we anticipated would have her missing the finale which in past seasons only includes three queens. Instead Ru sent all four queens to the finale, but that hasn’t stopped us from expecting a 4th place finish for Pep. But maybe we shouldn’t be so sure — with the new lip synch component of the finale, Peppermint could actually pull a come-from-behind win considering she had to do just that twice this season when she sent Cynthia Lee Fontaine and 5th place finisher Alexis Michelle home on the strength of her lip synchs. If I were one of the other queens I would be shook to the core by this last-minute curve ball!
Sasha Velour – 11/4 odds of finishing 2nd: Sasha is the only finalist that never appeared in the Bottom 2 this season, making her the most well-regarded among the judges. She also seems to be one of the most popular among fans — Sasha won our poll “Who do you WANT to win?” by an overwhelming margin, taking in 51% of the votes (more than double that of Shea in second place with 24%). As is typical of Ru’s finales, she asked fans to vote for who they want to win on social media, too, and takes those results into account when making her decision. For that reason, a 2nd place finish might be too low of an expectation for Sasha.
Shea Coulee – 17/10 odds of winning: Shea is the winningest queen this season, bringing in four challenge wins and only appearing in the bottom once, when she successfully sent Nina Bo’Nina Brown home in the Episode 10 lip synch. Shea has proven herself to be successful as a comedy queen and a fashion queen, confident as much as she is vulnerable and always firmly in control of her image — it’s no small wonder why she’s our pick to win. But if she wants to snatch that crown she’ll have to pull out another show-stopping lip synch or two.
Trinity Taylor – 13/5 odds of finishing 3rd: Though she has more challenge wins than both Sasha and Peppermint, Trinity’s time on the show was the most inconsistent of all the finalists. In the last five episodes she’s been a top performer three times and a bottom performer twice. That being said, Trinity takes greater risks than any of the other queens and has broken out beyond the mold of pageant queen that she started the competition with. I fully expect Trinity to bring a sickening look (or two or three) to finale night and to do everything she can to shut it down with a memorable final lip synch.
