Scarlett Johansson Movies: Top 12 Roles from ‘Ghost in the Shell’ to ‘The Avengers’ to ‘Lost in Translation’ [PHOTOS]

Scarlett Johansson is back in kick-ass mode this weekend as she stars in a remake of the Japanese anime classic “Ghost in the Shell.”  Johansson plays The Major, a cyborg counter-cyberterrorist field commander who leads a task force to fight hackers and terrorists. The new film gives us a chance to look back at a dozen of her best performances, from action to drama to comedy. Tour through our photo gallery above to find out if your favorite performance made the cut.

Johansson is, of course, no stranger to action roles, having played the title character in Luc Bresson’s “Lucy” and superhero Black Widow in the Marvel series of films, such as “Iron Man 2,” two films in “The Avengers” series and another two in the “Captain America” films. But Johansson has demonstrated a wide range of acting skills in a wide range of roles, from a bathing beauty, a seductive alien and even as a disembodied voice.

Johansson started acting at the age of 10 with a role in Rob Reiner’s Razzie-winning “North” (1994). Since then, she’s become one of Hollywood’s most sought after stars, with four Golden Globe nominations under her belt (Comedy/Musical Actress for “Lost in Translation” in 2003, Drama Actress for “Girl with a Pearl Earring” in 2003 and “A Love Song for Bobby Long” in 2004, and Supporting Actress for “Match Point” in 2005). She won at BAFTA as a lead actress for “Lost in Translation” but has yet to receive an Oscar nomination.

In addition to her movies, she also recently became one of the few members of the five-time host club on “Saturday Night Live.” Will Johansson earn a first-ever Emmy nom later this summer?
