The big-budget sci-fi series “Sense8” follows the adventures of eight individuals around the world connected by a psychic link. It was recently cancelled by Netflix after two seasons despite fan outcry, but it’s on the Emmy ballot for potential nominations and wins for its farewell season. And that’s certainly possible given that it’s already an Emmy nominated show. In 2016 it contended for Best Main Title Theme Music for the composition by Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer.
“Sense8” may contend again for its music, but ballots are not available for music categories, since the voting process for those awards is different from most other races (more on that here). However, we do know for sure that it will contend in various other categories, from Best Drama Series all the way down to Best Sound Mixing — though surprisingly not for Best Stunt Coordination despite abundant fight, chase and action sequences.
Of the show’s ensemble cast, 12 are in the running for acting. The core eight stars have all been entered in supporting categories: Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Miguel Angel Silvestre and Tony nominee Brian J. Smith for Best Drama Supporting Actor, and Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai and Tuppence Middleton for Best Drama Supporting Actress. Also up for Emmy consideration in supporting categories are past Emmy nominee Naveen Andrews (“Lost”) as the sensates’ mentor and Daryl Hannah as the sensates’ “mother.” Tony nominee Terrence Mann is additionally in the running for his supporting role as the sensates’ nemesis Whispers.
But there is one performer in contention for Best Drama Actor, and he’s somewhat surprising. Alfonso Herrera plays Hernando Fuentes, the longtime partner of sensate Lito (Silvestre), and he is submitted in the lead category. Herrara also contends for Best Drama Actor for another series role this year: as Father Tomas Ortega in the FOX drama “The Exorcist.”
