Snoop Dogg is courting controversy this week with his new music video for “Lavender,” his remix of a song by BADBADNOTGOOD featuring Kaytranada. The scorching satire features a shooting during a police traffic stop and a clown president named “Ronald Klump.” Late in the video Snoop Dogg is shown holding Klump at gunpoint, then firing. It’s a toy gun that shoots out a flag that reads “BANG,” and Klump is still alive for the rest of the video, but does Snoop Dogg go too far with this imagery? The veteran rapper didn’t mince words about Donald Trump when he discussed the song and video with Billboard. “The ban that this motherf*cker tried to put up; him winning the presidency; police being able to kill motherf*ckers and get away with it; people being in jail for weed for 20, 30 years and motherf*ckers that’s not black on the streets making money off of it … It’s a lot of clown sh*t going on that we could just sit and talk on the phone all day about, but it’s a few issues that we really wanted to lock into.”
Director Jesse Wellens is also proud of the video, saying, “When I watch it against other music videos, this one has a message and a story. It looks like a film. I’m just proud of the entire piece altogether.”
Not everyone is happy with it, of course. Donald Trump‘s attorney Michael Cohen told TMZ, “It’s totally disgraceful. Snoop owes the president an apology. There’s absolutely nothing funny about an assassination attempt on a president, and I’m really shocked at him because I thought he was better than that.”
