Back in 1986, Spike Lee made his name with his breakthrough film “She’s Gotta Have It.” He has updated the story and is re-telling it across 10 episodes that will start steaming on Netflix on Nov. 23. “Shots Fired” scene stealer DeWanda Wise is taking on the part of Nola Darling, the artist at the center of the story, that was played to perfection in the film by Tracy Camilla Johns.
In the upcoming TV series, Nola is still juggling three lovers: investment banker Jamie (played by Lyriq Bent from “The Book of Negroes”), model Greer Childs (“Divergent” supporting player Cleo Anthony) and Mars (“Hamilton” breakout star Anthony Ramos). In the film, Lee also played that latter part.
This time around the honorary Oscar winner is staying behind the camera. He wrote and directed all 10 episodes and is producing the series with two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (“Ruined,” “Sweat”) and Barry Michael Cooper. Lee has welcomed “the opportunity to revisit these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant-garde three decades later.”
