Welcome aboard, Jason Isaacs! According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Star Trek: Discovery” has cast the British actor as Captain Lorca, who leads the crew of the Starship Discovery. After a couple of delays — the series was originally expected to premiere in January 2017 — “Discovery” is expected to arrive on CBS All Access this summer or fall.
Isaacs is perhaps best known as Lucius Malfoy, an ally of Lord Voldemort, in the “Harry Potter” films. He has also appeared on the big screen in “The Patriot” (2000) and “Black Hawk Down” (2001), and his notable roles on TV include the series “Brotherhood,” “Awake,” “Dig” and “The OA.” He joins a “Discovery” cast that already includes “The Walking Dead” star Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, James Frain, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy and Sam Vartholomeos.
“Discovery” is the first new “Star Trek” series since “Enterprise,” which aired on UPN from 2001 to 2005. Isaacs joins a storied tradition of “Star Trek” TV captains that has previously included William Shatner (the original series), Patrick Stewart (“The Next Generation”), Avery Brooks (“Deep Space Nine”), Kate Mulgrew (“Voyager”) and Scott Bakula (“Enterprise”). Chris Pine also recently joined that list, reprising Shatner’s role as Captain Kirk in the cinematic reboot of the original “Star Trek” series.
