Taylor Swift could win a Grammy in 2018, but it might not be for her own songs

Taylor Swift‘s sixth album “Reputation” isn’t released until November 10, so it won’t be eligible at the Grammys until 2019 given these awards’ unique eligibility period (October 1 through September 30), but Swift did release music this year that could potentially earn her a handful or more nominations. She collaborated with Zayn on “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” from the film “Fifty Shades Darker,” and in August she dropped “Look What You Made Me Do” to much fanfare. But her best shot could be for a song she didn’t even perform: Little Big Town‘s “Better Man,” which she wrote.

If Swift gets all the Grammy nominations available to her this year she could clean up: “Look” could contend for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo, and Best Music Video, while “I Don’t Wanna Live” has a shot at Best Pop Duo/Group and Best Visual Media Song. However, “Look” has been divisive, and “I Don’t Wanna Live” was released back in December 2016 and may not be as fresh in mind for Grammy voters. So perhaps a Swift return to her country songwriting roots will be the ticket to Grammy success.

True, “Better Man” was released almost a year ago — October 20, 2016 — even before “I Don’t Wanna Live,” but Little Big Town are big fish in the country music pond this year, as evidenced by their four CMA nominations, including Album of the Year for “The Breaker” and Single of the Year for “Better Man.” As of this writing Swift is the CMA frontrunner for Song of the Year for penning the breakup ballad, which could propel her to a nomination in the same category at the Grammys, or at the very least Best Country Song, which she previously won for “White Horse” (2010) and “Mean” (2012).
