‘The Get Down’ out at Netflix after one season

Netflix has opted not to make another season of Baz Luhrmann‘s lavish musical series “The Get Down.” The Oscar-nominated director (“Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby”) created this period piece set in the South Bronx ofthe late 1970s when hip-hop was just beginning. The sprawling story told of teens who become involved in the burgeoning music scene.

Grammy nominated rapper Nas served as both executive producer and narrator as an adult version of lead character Zeke (Justice Smith). We first meet Zeke in high school when he is a precocious teenage poet in love with his friend Mylene (Herizen F. Guardiola), who harbors her own dreams of music stardom.

While the series won’t get a second season, its first and only 11 episodes could well be in contention at the upcoming Emmy Awards. Visually and stylistically ambitious, it was overseen also Luhrmann’s wife Catherine Martin, a four-time Oscar winning costume and production designer.
