‘The Great Showman’ trailer: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams sizzle in hot Oscar contender

Hugh Jackman reaped his only Oscar nomination for his leading role in the movie version of the smash hit Broadway musical “Les Miserables.” He is back singing on screen in “The Greatest Showman,” a biopic of circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Joining him in this musical extravaganza from 20th Century Fox, which opens Christmas Day, is four-time Oscar contender Michelle Williams. She plays Charity, his first-love who became the star of his innovative three-ring circus.

This visual extravaganza is directed by Michael Gracey, who made his name directing award-winning TV ads in his native Australia. The script is by Oscar winner Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) and Jenny Bicks. And the songs are by Oscar-winning tunesmiths Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La. Land”) who are fresh off their Tony victory for “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Jackman won a Tony award for his turn as modern-day showman, Peter Allen, in the smash hit musical “The Boy from Oz.” He also picked up an Emmy for one of his three times hosting of these top theater awards.

Lending support in “The Great Showman” are “High School Musical” alum Zac Efron as a young lawyer bewitched by a trapeze artist (Zendaya), Rebecca Ferguson as Swedish songbird Jenny Lind and Tony nominee Keala Settle (“Waitress”) who steals scenes as the Bearded Lady.
