“I think I’m going crazy. How are you not going crazy?” Nora Durst (Carrie Coon) asks Erika Murphy (Regina King) in a new trailer for the third and final season of “The Leftovers,” which HBO premiered on Thursday, March 16 (watch above). The series returns on April 16.
In the trailer the characters dread October 14, the anniversary of the moment when two-percent of the world’s population disappeared without a trace and without explanation, leaving those left behind in grief and uncertainty. Kevin Garvey Sr. (Scott Glenn), who is unbalanced but may also be prophetic, explains, “On the seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure the rains will come, and with them a great flood.”
Then he tells his son, Kevin Jr. (Justin Theroux), “You are the only man alive who can make it stop.” Does that make the younger Kevin some kind of mythic figure? In the season two finale he literally died and came back to life, waking up healed after a gunshot wound to the chest. If there is an apocalypse coming, can he really avert it? No wonder Nora is on the brink of madness.
