‘The Voice’ battle: Vanessa Ferguson vs. Autumn Turner with ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’ for Team Alicia Keys [POLL]

The second of the nine battles on the March 27 episode of “The Voice” pitted two of Alicia Keys‘ artists — Vanessa Ferguson and Autumn Turner — against each other. For their battle song, Keys chose to showcase two of her strong female artists with “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

Roberta Flack had a huge hit in 1973 with this chart-topping soul song, which won both Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys. In 1997,  the Fugees did a cover that won them a Grammy for Best R&B Duo/Group Performance. Ferguson masterfully blended the two versions and got the backing of Keys while Turner struggled to connect with the lyrics. However, Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani saw potential in her and she chose to work with the former, becoming the first of his steals.

POLL: Who is the greatest ‘The Voice’ champion of all time?

When Ferguson did her blind audition on March 13, this 31-year-old classically trained talent from Greensboro, NC rocked the house with her performance of “Don’t Let Me Down,” the 2016 hit for The Chainsmokers. While Levine took a pass, Ferguson had Keys, Blake Shelton and Stefani fighting for her affections. Shelton tried to make his case that he would not try to countrify her but ,in the end, she went with her idol, Keys.

Turner was the lead act on the February 28 blind audition episode. This 25-year-old from Montclair, NJ set the bar high with her soaring version of the Oscar and Grammy-winning Donna Summer disco hit “Last Dance.” While Levine turned first, before being joined by the other three coaches, Turner went with Keys.
