Two of the better artists on Team Gwen Stefani were paired together in an excellent battle on Tuesday’s “The Voice.” It was fan favorite Johnny Gates vs. Sammie Zonana with the rock hit “I Drove All Night,” a frequently covered song from Roy Orbison, Cyndi Lauper, and Gwen’s advisor Celine Dion (watch above). After Gwen selected Johnny to move on for Season 12, none of the other coaches — Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Alicia Keys — chose not to use their steal on Sammie. Her journey is now over.
Our writer Denton Davidson ranked this battle as a top performance on Tuesday. He says, “Gwen paired Johnny and Sammie together because they both have a rock edge to their voices and potentially fill the same slot on her team. Although they are two of my favorite artists on Team Gwen, the decision made sense. The duo performed well together on stage, with Johnny playing his guitar while Sammie worked the stage. Neither of them blew me away vocally with this performance, but it was clear to all the coaches that Johnny was the one with star power. Gwen chose Johnny as the winner, eliminating Sammie from the competition.”
The NBC bio for Johnny: “Johnny started pursuing music at 18 when he was asked to join the band Runaway Saints because he “had awesome hair.” They performed locally in Rhode Island and moved to Nashville in 2008. Nathan Chapman, a Taylor Swift producer, took them under his wing, but after multiple album setbacks, Johnny moved to Los Angeles. Not long after moving, he opened for Rod Stewart for three weeks on a Midwest tour. The band is currently on a break, but Johnny continues to play around the L.A. scene.”
The NBC bio for Sammie: “Sammie did not discover music until college, where she taught herself the guitar via YouTube tutorials. She turned her passion for screenwriting into songwriting. She works as a data entry assistant on the side and is currently planning her wedding with her fiancée, Brooke, for whom she wrote a love song. She comes from a religious family, so it was difficult for her to come out, but her parents have come around and love her more than ever.”
