‘The Voice’ knockout: Team Gwen Stefani pits Aaliyah Rose vs. Brennley Brown [WATCH]

Who would be the winner when coach Gwen Stefani pitted two young artists on Tuesday’s second knockout round of Season 12 for “The Voice”? Aaliyah Rose took on the recent Meghan Trainor hit song “Like I’m Going to Lose You” while Brennley Brown performed the Kelly Clarkson tune “Up to the Mountain.” It turned out to be a great showdown with Gwen selecting Brennley for the live rounds starting on April 17. But it was ultimately good news for Aaliyah as well when Blake Shelton stole her to join his team moving forward (watch their knockout performances below).

Our writer John Denutty ranked this battle as the best match-up on Tuesday’s episode. He says, “Gwen’s dream artist this season has been a young, pop female singer that she can cultivate in much the same way that her own career began. In Aaliyah and Brennley (who she stole from Blake in the battle rounds) Gwen has that chance. Both artists chose soulful songs that expanded their identity as pop and country artists. Both girls gave full, rich and textured performances, proving that they are capable for work well beyond what their young ages would suggest. For that reason it’s fitting that both artists will be performing in the live playoffs — Gwen gave the win to Brennley, leaving Aaliyah available for Blake to steal.”

The NBC bio for Aaliyah: “Aaliyah stepped on stage for the first time at age four and hasn’t stopped since. Since age 10, she has posted more than 50 videos on YouTube with the help of her mom, gaining over 13 million views. She caught the eye of Radio Disney after performing ‘Let It Go’ at their award show and later posted a Meghan Trainor cover, which caught Meghan’s attention and forged a friendship. She’s been singing with Gladys Knight’s choir, Saints Unified Voices, for the past six months.”

The NBC bio for Brennley: “Brennley grew up listening to country music and performing in school talent shows. Her signature move was throwing her pink cowgirl hat into the audience at shows. She recently was cast as Lily on the animated show ‘Sofia the First.’ For two years, starting at age three, she watched her mother go in and out of hospitals before she was diagnosed with Lyme carditis, which has no cure. Music helped Brennley cope with her mother’s diagnosis. Her dad owns a hair salon where she spends her spare time when she’s not gigging, doing voiceover work or homework!”
