The first of the three playoff rounds on season 13 of “The Voice” aired Nov. 13 on NBC. By the end of the evening, two of the four coaches — Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton — had cut their teams in half. Heading into the playoff, each of these coaches had six artists on their team: four that won in match-ups on the knockout rounds, one that they stole from a rival coach, and one comeback artist that they brought back for another chance. Scroll down to see the songs each sung and the results.
Turns out that the comebacks for Hudson’s artist Lucas Holliday and Shelton’s Natalie Stovall were short-lived. Neither of them made the final 3 that will sing on the live shows that start Nov. 20. Hudson also bounced Hannah Mrozak and Chris Weaver from her line-up. Shelton also gave the chop to Mitchell Lee and Esera Tuaolo.
Shelton has been with “The Voice” from the start and has won five of the previous 12 seasons: Jermaine Paul (Season 2), Cassadee Pope (Season 3), Danielle Bradbery (Season 4), Craig Wayne Boyd (Season 7) and Sundance Head (Season 11). He is pinning his hopes for a sixth win on Chloe Kohanski, Red Marlow and Keisha Renee.
Hudson is a newcomer to the US edition of “The Voice” but is coming off a win on the British version of the show. She is hoping to replicate that success with Davon Fleming, Shi’Ann Jones and Noah Mac.
This playoff episode of “The Voice,” as well as the ones to air on Nov. 14 featuring the six artists on Team Miley Cyrus and Nov. 15 with Adam Levine‘s top six, were taped at the end of the summer. That is a departure from the format used for the past six seasons of “The Voice” where America voted in two live playoff episodes.
