Talk about a tale of two reality TV shows. While NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” 2017 ended last week on a seven-year high in terms of overall viewers, “The Voice” Season 13 premiere began Monday night with its lowest debut numbers of all time. Thanks to the epic showdown between singing ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer and child singer Angelica Hale, “AGT” Season 12 concluded with a whopping 15.64 million viewers, making it the most watched finale since 2010. Farmer went on to win “Americas Got Talent,” while Hale placed second.
On Monday’s premiere episode of “The Voice,” only 10.4 million viewers tuned in to see new coach Jennifer Hudson join second-timer Miley Cyrus and series mainstays Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Among the blind auditions that are sure to go viral are Dave Crosby and his four-year-old daughter, one-time aspiring dentist Mitchell Lee, and 15-year-old phenom Shi-Ann Jones.
While “The Voice’s” Season 13 viewership ratings may seem low compared to last season’s opener that attracted 13.03 million, they are still higher than their spring finale. Only 9.35 million people tuned in to see Chris Blue take down Lauren Duski last season to be the show’s 12th winner. See all “The Voice” winners right here.
Just last week “The Voice” won the Emmy for Best Reality-Competition Program for the fourth year, upsetting, among others, rising show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” (See our Emmys post-mortem theories for why “The Voice” was able to take down “RuPaul.”) With that victory, “The Voice” gets ever closer to matching category leader “The Amazing Race’s” record of 10 Emmy wins.
