Week 3 of the live shows began Monday night on “The Voice” Season 13, with gospel/country artist Keisha Renee representing Team Blake Shelton in the Top 10. Renee took a big risk this week by belting out Celine Dion‘s “All By Myself,” which Shelton said separated her from the pack. Do you think Renee did good enough to advance to next week’s Top 8? Watch Renee’s winning performance from “The Voice” playoffs above.
Our writer Denton Davidson live-blogged the episode, and as he noted, “Keisha has one of my favorite voices in the competition. It’s like butter! She’s wearing a gown that has a train flowing all the way down a flight of stairs. Her intricate runs go up the scale when you think she’s going to go down it. Those musical choices are fun to watch, although this arrangement is lacking. Did she hit the big note? Yes! As a pack of female violinists in matching dresses accompanied her. Overall, this was a tour-de-force that brought the coaches to their feet.”
Back in her blind audition of the reality TV show, Renee performed “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and all four coaches turned their chairs around: Shelton, Miley Cyrus, Adam Levine and Jennifer Hudson. The next time we saw Renee in the battle rounds, she and Noah Mac sang “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and Renee was declared the winner by her coach Shelton. In the knockouts Renee was paired up against Kathrina Feigh, with Renee proving victorious thanks to her performance of “I Hope You Dance.” Renee’s rendition of “When I Think About Cheatin'” in the playoffs was good enough to send her through to the live shows. She sang “Delta Dawn” during Top 12 week and “Chicken Fried” during Top 11 week.
Renee is 30 years old and currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here’s the official NBC bio: “Keisha was born in Los Angeles and grew up singing at church. Gospel music is definitely her foundation, but after high school she moved to Houston where she discovered country music. Though she fell in love with country, it took her a long time to pursue it because she was often told she would be better suited for pop or R&B. Keisha spent seven years working as a professional background singer, and for the last five years her boss has been Nicki Minaj. Touring with Nicki was absolutely amazing, but after having her daughter Amari two years ago, Keisha underwent a big lifestyle change. Throughout her life she has always struggled with her weight and during her pregnancy she weighed 356 pounds and was diagnosed with diabetes. It was a huge wake-up call for her and Keisha feels having her daughter helped save her life. She has since lost the weight and feels like now is the time to finally go after her true dream of becoming a country artist.”
