Night 1 of the live shows aired Monday night on “The Voice” Season 13, with soul artist Janice Freeman representing Team Miley Cyrus in the Top 12. Freeman closed out the night with a show-stopping rendition of Brandi Carlile‘s “The Story,” which Freeman dedicated to her loving husband. Our writer Denton Davidson live-blogged the episode, and as he proclaimed, “Janice’s voice is so big and rich even when she sings softly. The shaved head, hoop earrings and dress are all on point! When she got to the chorus of the song she unleashed a passionate scream that instantly gave me goosebumps. This woman is a force of nature! I don’t know if everyone gave this woman a chance after her blind audition, but she has proven to be one of the brightest lights of the season. Best performance of the night! All coaches on their feet.”
Back in her blind audition, Freeman performed “Radioactive” and had two coaches turn their chairs around: Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson. The next time we saw Freeman in the battle rounds, she and Katrina Rose sang “W.O.M.A.N” and Freeman was declared the winner by her coach Cyrus. In the knockouts Freeman was paired up against Karli Webster and Freeman prevailed thanks to her performance of “I’m Goin’ Down.” Finally, Freeman’s rendition of “Fall For You” in the playoffs was good enough to send her through to the live shows.
Freeman is 32 years old and currently resides in Compton, California. Here’s the official NBC bio: “When Janice was 21 years old, her daughter, Hannah, was born. A few years later, when her daughter was only four, Hannah’s father passed away from cancer. It was really tough being a single mom, but it taught her how to be strong. Janice needed the strength because in 2012 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She fought it and survived. In the midst of all the tragedy, she met her wonderfully supportive husband. They have been married for two years, and he even gigs locally with her and her band. Having gone through so much, she is so thankful to be cancer-free and happily married, but needs this shot at a music career to provide stability for Hannah.”
