Most fans of “The Walking Dead” agree that Carol (Melissa McBride) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are total badasses. But not every survivor in the zombie apocalypse inspires such unified fandom. Some characters leave me shaking my head or screaming at the television at their boneheaded decisions. With such a large ensemble, would the series be better off saying goodbye to some annoying mainstays?
Perhaps the violent deaths this season have ignited my bloodthirstiness, or maybe I’m just tired of cringing as characters walk into disastrous scenarios that us viewers can see coming from miles away. Who should die next? Take a look at my five candidates for the chopping block, and vote in our poll below for the character you most want to see turned into zombie food. Find out if your pick survives another day when “The Walking Dead” Season 7 returns to AMC on Sunday, February 12.
In the mid-season finale, Rosita (Christian Serratos) had the best chance of taking down the despicable Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) thanks to a custom-made bullet. But, despite being at point blank range she nailed his baseball bat Lucille instead. Poor Olivia (Ann Mahoney) paid the price for the failed assassination attempt, taking a bullet to the head. Rosita’s rage and anguish after the death of Abraham could cause her to get more innocent people killed.
The leader of The Saviors is likely the most divisive character in the history of the TV series. Fans and critics remain split as to whether his over-the-top violence is exactly what the apocalypse needs, or if it’s just sadism without a point. Negan has claimed the lives of four “Team Rick” characters, taken Eugene (Josh McDermitt) hostage, and is quietly corrupting Carl (Chandler Riggs). His reign must be stopped at some point, though his detractors would surely like to give him a brutal sendoff sooner rather than later.
Is anyone a fan of Gregory (Xander Berkeley)? The leader of Hilltop Colony is by far the weakest and most ineffectual leader since the zombie outbreak. He can’t remember his own people’s names, he caves to pressure instantly, and he is willing to throw anyone under the bus (or tractor) for a modicum security and comfort. No offense to Mr Berkeley, who plays a perfect weasel, but it’s time for Maggie (Lauren Cohan) to take over Hilltop and throw Gregory to the walkers.
Spare me your outrage, Dixon fanatics! Daryl (Norman Reedus) has been a hugely popular character since the start of the show, but our favorite crossbow-wielding biker is solely responsible for Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) death. Glenn was so close to escaping his gruesome fate from the comics until Daryl punched Negan in the face. Since he is now a shell of his former self after being tortured by The Saviors, Daryl could continue to be a liability to the group.
There have been no shortage of bungled plans and dumb ideas on “The Walking Dead,” but Carl’s decision to stowaway in the back of The Saviors’ truck might be the worst of them. Carl is only able to kill two Saviors before being surrounded. What’s worse, this terribly planned invasion prompts Negan’s deadly visit to Alexandria. Sure, Carl now knows where the Sanctuary is located, but was it worth losing Olivia and Spencer (Austin Nichols) for a peek inside the camp?
