The mid-season finale of “The Walking Dead” Season 8 will air this Sunday, December 10. The extended episode, titled “How it’s Gotta Be,” has an air of mystery surrounding it. Most members of the cast have been mum on details, but teasing something “horrific.” Given that this is “The Walking Dead,” such secrecy around a mid-season finale surely means a main cast member is not long for this world. Who do you think will kick the bucket this week? Take a look at our best guesses and then vote in our poll below.
Daryl – Is it time to finally say goodbye to Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)? On the one hand, Daryl has a massive fan base, which has even lead to Norman Reedus’ own series on AMC, “Ride with Norman Reedus.” But, Daryl’s unsupervised attack on The Sanctuary has potentially put Rick (Andrew Lincoln) in a bind. If Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is able to escape The Sanctuary now that the yard is free of walkers, he will be heading straight towards Rick’s position. If Daryl spots Rick in a sticky situation, one that he caused, he may dive in and sacrifice himself to save his friend.
Carl – After putting down his mother and losing an eye, one would think Carl (Chandler Riggs) has suffered enough. Indeed the character is still an important mainstay of the comic series. But a scene from the season premiere is still nagging at my brain. The one where Rick kneels sobbing beneath a stained glass window. Given the wonky use of time in the premiere, it’s unclear if this scene was a flash-forward or merely taking place in Rick’s mind. But if the scene is real, the only thing that would reduce Rick to a sobbing mess is the death of a loved one. Did the premiere tease Carl’s death and Rick’s overwhelming grief?
Michonne – There is a second family member whose death would drive Rick over the edge, and that’s his new lover Michonne (Danai Gurira). In the trailer for the midseason finale, Carl is spotted telling Michonne “we only have to survive tonight.” Both of them were tasked with watching over Alexandria, so this could point to the community falling under attack. And with Danai Gurira experiencing a surge in her career (she’s a Tony nominated playwright for “Eclipsed” and will star as Okoye in “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War”), it’s always possible the actress may leave “The Walking Dead” behind.
Gabriel – When we last saw Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) he was suffering from a severe infection at The Sanctuary. The good news is that since Dr. Carson was searching for medicine, the infection doesn’t appear to be from a zombie bite. The bad news is that Dr. Carson doesn’t think he has the required medicine, The Sanctuary is overrun with walkers, and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) has refused to help the priest. Unless Eugene has a sudden change of heart, or Negan plans to use Gabe to bait Rick, it’s hard to see the Father making it out of The Sanctuary alive.
