Notably absent from the photos above is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays bat-swinging villain Negan, but this could be good news for his Emmy chances. Morgan recently won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Drama Guest Performer. But the producers have to be very careful if they’re intending for him to enter the similar Emmy guest race as he can only appear in two more episodes before he will have to be switched over to the supporting category. This is due to a rule change that guest actors and actresses must appear in less than 50% of the episodes within the eligibility period.

The season opened on October 23 with a bang as both Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) were killed by Negan and his trusty bat Lucille. That helped “The Walking Dead” score major ratings and it even re-energized the series. The mid-season finale saw Daryl (Norman Reedus) escape the Saviors’ base, Negan doing the audience a favor in killing whiny Spencer (Austin Nichols), and most of the main characters deciding it was time to fight Negan and the Saviors.
