Tom Holland on ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’: ‘It’s a massively different approach to the franchise’ [WATCH]

Tom Holland is already the third actor in the 21st century to play Spider-Man on the big screen after Tobey Maguire portrayed the web-slinger in three films (2002-2007) and Andrew Garfield played him in another two (2012-2014). But Holland didn’t have a problem making the role his own in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which opens July 7. As he said in a recent interview with MTV News (watch above), “I think I’m in a lucky position because I have five great movies that I can take things from and thousands of comic books that I can take things from that haven’t even been touched on yet.”

Holland’s age was also a benefit. At age 20 he’s younger than Maguire and Garfield were when they donned the spider suit (both were in their late 20s), so “we can really build a character that’s grounded in high school. A lot of this movie takes place in high school and watching a kid struggle and juggle chemistry homework and fighting a flying monster. So for me it wasn’t so difficult to try to find the differences in this character — it’s just a massively different approach to the franchise.”

Holland debuted his Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016, where he was recruited by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) to fight alongside him. That was the first time the character appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Marvel Studios reached a deal to share the rights to the character with Sony, which had produced the Maguire and Garfield films. Now, like many other stars of Marvel movies, he’s gearing up for “Avengers: Infinity War,” which is already scheduled for release on May 4, 2018. Holland can’t say much about the blockbuster film, which has been kept under wraps, but he does say, “It’s going to be insane. It’s the next level of movie-making.”
