2017 is almost over, and just like every year it has brought us many new household names who have taken big career leaps thanks to their performances in some of the year’s most noteworthy films. Many of them are awards contenders, while others took the box office by storm. Some even managed to do both. Click through our gallery above of 20 stars who made a big impact this year.
A number of new faces could earn their first Oscar nominations. After playing a number of supporting roles in film and television, Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name“) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out“) have racked up critical raves and nominations at several precursor awards, including the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and SAG Awards. They could potentially become among the youngest Best Actor Oscar nominees in history. Meanwhile, nine-time Grammy-winner Mary J. Blige has been a music star for years, but earned acclaim in a different medium thanks to her much-heralded turn as a devoted wife and mother in “Mudbound.”
Those aren’t the only breakthrough film stars of 2017. A number of actors delivered star-making performances this year in a variety of projects. Some had worked for years before getting big breaks in box-office blockbusters, including Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman” and “Justice League”), Kelly Marie Tran (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), and Bill Skarsgard (“It”). Others were established supporting players who found success in bigger showcase roles, like Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”) and Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”). And then there were those big-screen first-timers who hit it big in their debut feature films, including Dafne Keen (“Logan”) and Bria Vinaite (“The Florida Project”).
