“I was so flattered,” admits Vanessa Bayer as we chat via webcam (watch the exclusive video interview above) about her career first Emmy nomination as Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “Saturday Night Live.” The actress contends for her last season of the legendary comedy sketch series. “I called ‘SNL’ my home for so many years,” she adds. “To get to leave and have that honor was just amazing.”
The actress submitted the season finale, which was also her final appearance, for Emmy consideration. “I got to do so many things that I love,” she divulges, including playing weather girl Dawn Lazarus on “Weekend Update,” a 1940s movie star with embarrassing flatulence, and a woman on a Jurassic Park theme ride. During the curtain call, Bayer reveals that she and fellow departing cast member Bobby Moynihan were carried off the stage, which was, “such a beautiful ending.” The episode, hosted by Dwayne Johnson, “sort of encapsulated my time there.”
Bayer spent seven years at “Saturday Night Live.” She will soon star in the upcoming film “Ibiza” with Gillian Jacobs and Phoebe Robinson.
“Saturday Night Live” had its most talked about season in years following the election of Donald Trump. The show reaped 22 Emmy nominations, tying “Westworld” for the most bids of the year. In addition to Bayer, “SNL” competes for Best Variety Sketch Series, Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Alec Baldwin), Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon), Best Comedy Guest Actor (Dave Chappelle, Tom Hanks, and Lin Manuel-Miranda), and Best Comedy Guest Actress (Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig).
