If our Emmy experts are correct that Julia Louis-Dreyfus will earn yet another Best Comedy Actress nomination for playing ex-President Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” she’ll need to select one episode to submit for awards consideration. Louis-Dreyfus is no stranger to this unique process, having taken home five Emmys for “Veep” (2012-2016), one for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (2006) and another for “Seinfeld” (1996) by picking episodes that showed off her range and humor. Which episode of “Veep” Season 6 do YOU think best showcases Louis-Dreyfus? Vote in our poll below.
One of Louis-Dreyfus’ strongest episodes is no doubt this week’s season finale, “Groundbreaking.” There are various flashbacks sprinkled throughout the half-hour that reveal different sides of Silena, including giving birth to Catherine, discovering that her husband Andrew (David Pasquesi) is cheating on her, finding out that her V.P. office would not be in the West Wing as promised, and going to a mental institution following last season’s finale. While Selina is her usual cynical self throughout much of the present-day scenes, the season ends on a hopeful note as she gets the gang back together to run again for President.
The seventh episode, “Blurb,” is also a fun outing for Louis-Dreyfus as she goes head-to-head with Hugh Laurie‘s Tom James yet again. Selina’s old Vice President betrays her in memorable fashion when he goes to the press and basically accuses her of sexual misconduct, in an effort to prevent her from revealing their affair in her new memoir. The final showdown between Louis-Dreyfus and Laurie is ripe with sexual tension, made all the more powerful by having them not act out their feelings for one another.
In “Chicklet,” the fifth episode of Season 6, Louis-Dreyfus gives what our “Veep” recapper David Buchanan calls an “Emmy-worthy performance.” This was the episode in which Selina deals with her daddy issues by getting drunk, destroying his old barn full of memories, and then smashing her car through the wall. “Louis-Dreyfus delivers a tour de force performance,” writes Buchanan, “seamlessly navigating Selina’s sorrow, rage, and ultimate resilience, all while nailing the physical comedy of Selina farcically wielding that huge oar.”
Those are just a few of our suggestions, but what episode do YOU think Louis-Dreyfus should enter for Emmy consideration? Vote down in our “Veep” Season 6 poll and then be sure to sound off in our world-famous TV forums. If Louis-Dreyfus wins another acting Emmy this year, she will tie Cloris Leachman, the current record holder who has eight primetime trophies.
