Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Viola Davis is entering the “How to Get Away with Murder” episode “Wes” as her Emmy submission for Best Drama Actress. This installment is the 15th and final episode of the third season for the ABC show. In this segment, Annalise Keating (Davis) and the Keating 4 test their limits when the chilling details surface about who killed Wes Gibbins (Alfred Enoch) the night of the fire. Accusations fly between Annalise and several other characters to determine the murderer. At an AA meeting, she confesses while crying to being an alcoholic in a meltdown and how she recently lost a student who she knew since he was a boy.
Davis won this category two years ago but lost in 2016 to Tatiana Maslany, who can’t return to the 2017 race since “Orphan Black” aired no episodes this past season. Davis is contending against previous nominees Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Keri Russell (“The Americans”), Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”), and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), plus first-timer Claire Foy (“The Crown”).
This year marks the third consecutive nomination for Davis at the Emmys. She won an Academy Award earlier this year for “Fences” on her third attempt. She also has triumphed twice at the Tony Awards for “King Hedley II” (2001) and “Fences” (2010). Davis is one of 13 people who just need a Grammy Award win to join the exclusive EGOT club that only has a dozen members.
