The A-list stars keep piling up at Netflix. Just one day after premiering a new teaser for the film “Okja” from director Bong Joon-ho and starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal, the streaming service debuted another teaser on March 1, this time for “War Machine” (watch above).
The new film is based on the nonfiction book “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of Stanley McChrystal’s War in Afghanistan” by the late journalist Michael Hastings, who died in a car crash in 2013 at the age of 33. The satirical film stars Brad Pitt as real-life US General Stanley McChrystal, who was the Commander of U.S. and NATO Coalition Forces in Afghanistan until his interview with Hastings for Rolling Stone magazine derailed his career and forced his resignation. The star-studded cast also includes “Okja’s” Tilda Swinton, Ben Kingsley, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Anthony Michael Hall and Lakeith Stanfield, among others.
The screenwriter and director of the film is Australian filmmaker David Michod, best known for the crime film “Animal Kingdom,” which earned an Oscar nomination for supporting actress Jacki Weaver and also helped introduce international audiences to soon-to-be-stars Joel Edgerton (“Loving”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline”) and Sullivan Stapleton (“Blindspot”). Michod also directed the dystopian thriller “The Rover” (2014) with Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. “War Machine” is his third feature film.
