Our list spans many sci-fi classics, from “Star Wars” to “Star Trek,” from “Mad Max” to “The Matrix.” Of course, some films offer many great choices, but a warning ahead that only one hero per title could make the cut according to our own made-up rules. So, did Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) edge out Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), or did they both fall to the awesome glory of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher)? Will it be Captain Kirk (William Shatner) or Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Does Neo (Keanu Reeves) reign or is it Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne)?

We must confess, however, to cheating a little. After all, who can pick just one Ghostbuster out of four (the originals from 1984 and not the ladies from 2016)? Who could separate the Men in Black, when Agent J (Will Smith) could barely get by without Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones)? And we decided to draw a distinction between the original “Mad Max” trilogy and “Mad Max: Fury Road,” allowing one choice from each. Otherwise, we stuck to a strict doctrine.
