The awards will be hosted by singer Kelly Clarkson, who is also performing at the event along with BTS, Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, Khalid, John Legend, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez and Shawn Mendes, plus collaborations between Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato, Macklemore and Kesha, Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue, and Zedd with Maren Morris and Grey. There will also be a special performance by Janet Jackson in celebration of her receiving the Icon Award. Billboard established the Icon Award in 2011 to celebrate veterans’ contributions to the industry, with past winners including Stevie Wonder, Prince and Celine Dion.
The Billboard Music Awards honor artists for fan interactions with their music. So winners are based on a combination of record sales, radio airplay, streaming performance, touring and social media engagement, just like the Billboard charts themselves. The top nominees at this year’s awards are Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, who are up for 15 awards apiece including Top Artist of the Year. Also nominated in that top race are defending champion Drake and two-time past champ Taylor Swift.
