2018 Critics’ Choice TV predictions: Robert De Niro (‘The Wizard of Lies’) faces off with Globe champ Ewan McGregor (‘Fargo’)

Robert De Niro will add one of the few trophies missing from his collection if our Critics’ Choice Awards odds are correct. According to our latest predictions, the “Wizard of Lies” star has 9/5 odds of winning Best Movie/Limited Series Actor at Thursday’s ceremony, just ahead of Golden Globe champ Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”), who stands at 21/10 odds. Jeff Daniels (“Godless”) is third (5/2 odds) and Evan Peters (“American Horror Story: Cult”) is fourth (3/1 odds), followed by a three-way tie at 10/3 odds between Jimmy Tatro (“American Vandal”), Bill Pullman (“The Sinner”) and Jack O’Connell (“Godless”).

Two of our three participating Experts, Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Adnan Virk (ESPN), are tapping De Niro, while I am picking McGregor. Gold Derby Editors are split between three men: De Niro (Marcus James Dixon, Paul Sheehan), McGregor (Daniel Montgomery, Chris Beachum) and Daniels (Rob Licuria).

This would be De Niro’s first Critics’ Choice win. The two-time Oscar winner was nominated five years ago for his supporting turn in “Silver Linings Playbook,” but lost to Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Master”).

De Niro needs to watch out for McGregor though. Voting for winners opened Monday, after the Globes, so McGregor’s triumph there might have some sway. “Fargo” has also historically done very well at Critics’ Choice, twice winning Best Limited Series and scoring statuettes for stars Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Jean Smart.
