On January 25 the national television academy announced the pre-nominations for the 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards, and “Days of Our Lives’ leads the way with 20 entries, followed by “General Hospital” with 17, “The Young and the Restless” with 15, and “The Bold and the Beautiful” rounding out the list with 9. Scroll down for the complete list of contenders.
These preliminary lists in the drama series acting categories were determined by eligible peer voters who watched sample performances from all entrants before selecting the top 10 contenders in each category. (Due to a tie, there are 11 pre-nominees for Best Actress.) These pre-nominees will now advance to the blue ribbon round starting on February 22, when voters will watch performance submissions to vote for the best. The blue ribbon round is especially consequential as it will determine the ultimate winners as well as the nominees.
The only categories that function differently in the pre-nominations are Best Younger Actor and Best Younger Actress. In those two contests all eligible entrants skip the first round and go straight to the blue ribbon panels in February.
This year’s pre-noms are a bit of a surprise as “Y&R” usually leads the way with the most acting contenders, but this time the top-rated soap has lost some ground, dropping from a field-leading 19 last year to 15 this year. “Days,” meanwhile, has skyrocketed to 20 citations, up from 15 last year. “GH” also got a boost with 17, up from 14 in 2017. “B&B” holds steady with nine.
Daytime Emmys Senior Vice President David Michaels said in a statement, “We are excited to officially launch the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards with this list of extremely talented actors and actresses. Our 45th Anniversary show promises to be a star-studded gala filled with lots of surprises.”
Which pre-nominations surprise you the most? Who do you most want to see make the cut when the nominations are announced on March 21 live on the Emmy winning CBS talk show “The Talk”?
