Grammys 2018: ‘1-800-273-8255’ music video could win by channeling ‘Moonlight’ with help from Don Cheadle [WATCH]

Kendrick Lamar swept the MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year for “Humble,” but will that necessarily translate to the Grammys? He’s the current front-runner to win Best Music Video at this event as well with leading odds of 4/9. But “1-800-273-8255” may have a cinematic edge. It’s reminiscent of “Moonlight,” exploring the song’s themes of depression and suicide through the story of a black teenage boy struggling to be accepted as gay. Watch it above.

Directed by Andy Hines, the video features actor Coy Stewart as the central bullied teenager, Don Cheadle as his disapproving father, Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”) as his classmate with whom he’s in a relationship, Matthew Modine as Gould’s father, and Luis Guzman as Stewart’s coach. It’s essentially a seven-minute short film and stands out from this field of nominees. As of this writing it ranks second in our overall predictions with 9/2 odds, but one of the Expert journalists we’ve polled, Chris Willman (Gold Derby), says it will upset. It also has support from two of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Grammy winners, and three of our All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ predictions.

“1-800” is performed and co-written by Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid, who are also up for Song of the Year for their efforts. That indicates strong support for the song that could translate here, though two other nominees in this category (“Humble” and “The Story of O.J.” by Jay-Z) contend for Record of the Year, so they have more than their share of support as well. But they’re not backed up by award-winning actors like “1-800.”
