Fans of Frances McDormand should be pleased to know that not only is the “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” star predicted to win Best Actress at the Oscars, but she’s also the choice for who SHOULD win. Based on the early results of our 2018 Oscars Dream Ballot, which asks our readers to name their favorites in all 24 categories, McDormand leads with 33% for her role as bereaved mother Mildred in Martin McDonagh‘s small-town dramedy.
After her recent victories at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards McDormand looks to be unstoppable on her road to winning Oscar #2, following her prior trophy for “Fargo” (1996). As Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil reminded us in our recent predictions video, “She won her first Oscar years ago for giving us a kind of snarky defiance, but here we’ve got a raging defiance, which makes it all the bigger and all the more amazing.”
McDormand may lead the early results of our Dream Ballot with 33%, but Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”) also has strong support (29%) from our respondents. Ronan plays the titular character who deals with Laurie Metcalf‘s mommy issues while preparing to start the next chapter of her life. At only 23, this is Ronan’s third Oscar nomination after her prior bids for “Atonement” (2007) and “Brooklyn” (2015).
In third place is Sally Hawkins (23%) for her role as cleaning lady Elisa Esposito in “The Shape of Water.” Further behind is Margot Robbie (12%) who played troubled figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Rounding out our Dream Ballot results is Meryl Streep (3%) as Washington Post editor Kay Graham in “The Post.”
