While most awards prognosticators predict that Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) WILL win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, there’s a different story when fans pick who they think SHOULD win. Based on the early results of our 2018 Oscars Dream Ballot, which asks our readers to name their favorites in all 24 categories, Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) is just slightly ahead of Janney. The current razor-thin vote tally is Metcalf at 44% and Janney at 41%, but there’s still time to cast your dream votes.
Metcalf plays mother to Saoirse Ronan‘s titular “Lady Bird” in Greta Gerwig‘s coming-of-age story. The three-time Emmy winner for “Roseanne” (1992-94) is up for her first Oscar just one year after winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “A Doll’s House, Part 2.” So far this awards season Metcalf has come up short at the major televised ceremonies for “Lady Bird” (losing to Janney each time), but she did walk away with several critics’ prizes.
In “I, Tonya” Janney portrays LaVona Golden, the domineering mother of troubled figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie). After already taking home trophies at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards, Janney looks to be on her way to adding an Oscar to her fireplace mantel alongside her seven — yes, seven — Emmy Awards. Janney also has an impressive film career to her name which could help give her the edge with Oscar voters who generally turn their noses at TV stars.
In third place is Lesley Manville (8%) for her role as Daniel Day-Lewis‘ sister Cyril in “Phantom Thread.” Further behind is Octavia Spencer (4%) who played cleaning person Zelda Delilah Fuller in “The Shape of Water.” Rounding out our Dream Ballot results is Mary J. Blige (3%) as the mother of a World War II soldier in “Mudbound.”
