Good news, Sam Rockwell! Not only are you Gold Derby’s prediction for who WILL win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, but you’re also fans’ choice for who SHOULD win. Based on the early results of our 2018 Oscars Dream Ballot, which asks our readers to name their favorites in all 24 categories, the “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” scene-stealer has 45% support, compared to Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) at 33%. Agree or disagree with those results? There’s still time to cast your dream votes.
Rockwell takes on the role of racist police officer Jason Dixon in “Three Billboards,” for which he’s already scored major prizes at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Next up are the BAFTAs and the Oscars, where Rockwell is also predicted to prevail. Earlier this week Rockwell won Gold Derby’s poll asking who was the best “Saturday Night Live” host so far of 2018. Is there NOTHING this guy can’t win? (Watch our interview with Sam Rockwell.)
Dafoe took home several critics’ prizes for playing sympathetic motel manager Bobby Hicks in “The Florida Project,” and now contends at the Oscars. This is the third Oscar nomination of Dafoe’s career following his bids for “Shadow of the Vampire” (2000) and “Platoon” (1986). (Watch our interview with Willem Dafoe.)
In third place is Richard Jenkins (14%) for his role as Sally Hawkins‘ father in “The Shape of Water.” Further behind is Woody Harrelson (5%) who played Rockwell’s boss in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Rounding out our Dream Ballot results is Christopher Plummer (3%) as J. Paul Getty in “All the Money in the World.”
