2018 Teen Choice Awards: ‘Riverdale’ could sweep for the 2nd year in a row

Riverdale” earned its first MTV Movie and TV Award nominations this year, including Best Show. But The CW’s dark teen drama, an eerie take on the classic “Archie” comics, took a backseat to the Netflix sci-fi series “Stranger Things,” which swept the awards including top honors for both the show and its star Millie Bobby Brown. “Riverdale” had to settle for Best Scene Stealer (Madelaine Petsch) as a consolation prize. But at the upcoming Teen Choice Awards, which are also decided by fans, “Riverdale” could end up on top.

“Riverdale” dominated the Teen Choice nominations with 12 bids including Choice TV Drama, Choice TV Drama Actor (Cole Sprouse and K.J. Apa) and Choice TV Drama Actress (Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart). This time it doesn’t have to face “Stranger Things” in the top category; that show competes in a separate race honoring sci-fi and fantasy shows. But even if they went head-to-head “Riverdale” would be a force to be reckoned with.

The teen soap was unstoppable last year. It had eight nominations and ended up winning seven, and the only award it lost was to itself: Reinhart edged out Apa for Choice TV Breakout Star. It even beat “Pretty Little Liars” for Choice TV Drama, even though “Liars” had won that award for the previous five years in a row (2012-2016).

Now “Riverdale” is an even bigger force to be reckoned with, nominated 50% more than last year. Four of its five rivals from last year are back in the running in 2018: “Empire,” “Famous in Love,” “Star” and “This is Us.” Rounding out the category is “The Fosters,” taking the vacant slot from “Liars,” which ended its run last year.

Is this the start of a “Riverdale” winning streak? This category is prone to lengthy sweeps. Before “Pretty Little Liars” eclipsed its competition for half a decade “The O.C.” had won for three straight years (2004-2006) and “Gossip Girl” won for four (2008-2011).
