MTV just announced another pair of performers who will take the stage at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards: Post Malone and Travis Scott. The 35th annual event will air live on Monday night, August 20, at 9pm Eastern and Pacific, from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Post Malone has two nominations at this year’s VMAs: Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rockstar,” his collaboration with 21 Savage. These are the first VMA nominations for the hip-hop artist in a year full of milestones. Earlier this year he earned 13 Billboard Music Award noms for his achievements on the charts, and he won Top Rap Song for “Rockstar.” Last fall that song reached number-one on the Hot 100 and stayed there for eight weeks.
“Rockstar” was Post Malone’s first chart-topper, and it was followed this past spring by his first number-one album (“Beerbongs and Bentleys”) and his second number-one single (“Psycho”). Since the VMAs are decided by fans voting online, that level of popularity will make him a force to be reckoned with in both of his categories.
Fellow rapper Travis Scott has no VMA nominations thus far in his career, though he is a three-time Grammy nominee. He first earned a Best Rap Song bid in 2014 for co-writing Kanye West‘s “New Slaves.” Then he contended for Album of the Year in 2017 as a featured artist on Justin Bieber‘s “Purpose.” And earlier this year he was up for best Rap/Sung Performance with SZA for “Love Galore.”
Post Malone and Scott join a list of VMA performers that have already been announced: Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes and Logic with Ryan Tedder, in addition to Jennifer Lopez, who will perform a medley of her hits in celebration of her receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
