While the 91st annual Academy Awards are still three months away, the first of the precursor prizes will be handed out at the 28th annual Gotham Awards on Monday, November 26. These kudos are presented by the Independent Film Project, with the winners decided by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in making films.
In each of the last four years, the Gotham Awards winner for Best Feature has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and three of them won: “Birdman” (2014), “Spotlight” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2016). In 2017 the top Gotham Award went to “Call Me by Your Name,” which subsequently earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars and won Best Adapted Screenplay.
Prior to the Jan. 14 deadline for Oscar nomination ballots, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards will have taken place. The BAFTA Awards will have announced nominations as will the actors, directors, producers and writers guilds. And the major critics groups already will have weighed in with their top picks too.
Below, we detail these key dates.
