“Roma” won Best Picture from the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) on Nov. 29. Since then, we have started hearing from regional critics groups. Of the three such groups to weigh in to date, only the DC critics endorsed the pick by their Gotham counterparts. The Atlanta journos named “The Favourite” as the best picture of the year while the Detroit scribes embraced “Eighth Grade.”
“Roma” helmer Alfonso Cuaron is looking like a lock for Best Director with wins with all of the groups to date except Detroit. Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”) has followed up his Best Actor win with the NYFCC with trophies from both the Atlanta and Detroit critics. Likewise for Supporting Actress frontrunner Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) who has won over the DC and Detroit critics. Conversely, the lead actress and supporting actor awards have gone to four different contenders to date.
Last year, “Get Out” was the leader among the critics groups with nine wins versus seven for “Lady Bird” while Best Picture winner “The Shape of Water” was tops with just two groups. In 2016, “La La Land” and “Moonlight” were tied at 14 wins apiece among the major film critics groups. In 2015, Oscar winner “Spotlight” was the clear favorite among the scribes, with “Mad Max: Fury Road” far back in second place. In 2014, “Boyhood” had twice as many wins as the showbiz-themed “Birdman,” which then proved to be the favorite of the industry. 2013’s Oscar champ “12 Years a Slave” held the edge among the critics although the guilds split between it, “American Hustle” and “Gravity.” And in 2012, critics darling “Argo” was able to overcome the snub of Ben Affleck by the directors branch of the academy to take the top Oscar.
