Tuesday night during Night 6 of “The Voice” Season 15, pop singer Abby Cates took on Alessia Cara‘s “Scars to Your Beautiful” but only caused one coach to turn her chair around: Kelly Clarkson. The song meant a lot to Abby because she was scarred physically and emotionally from being in a horse accident when she was younger. For her day job Abby performs as a princess for children’s birthday parties. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” blind audition video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
“What?!” Kelly shouted when she realized that she was the only coach who pushed her button for the 17-year-old Cincinnati resident. “Your tone was just incredibly cool at the beginning. And then at the end I was like, man, I wonder if she can go high, and then you went with the change. Yes ma’am, I loved it. Oh, I have a jacket!”
Later Kelly compared Abby’s style to chart-topper Tori Kelly, noting, “Her vibe was very R&B/pop, so I’m excited to get in there and figure out her catalogue.” Will Abby become Kelly’s second consecutive young female champion after Brynn Cartelli last season? See the complete “Voice” winners list.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper Kevin Jacobsen had this to say about the performance: “Next up is Abby Cates, 17, from Cincinnati, Ohio. With experience working as a character actress at children’s parties, she also discusses breaking vertebrae after an accident. Abby is singing ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’ by Alessia Cara, which Kelly immediately responds to, turning her chair very early. No other coaches turn, but Jennifer clearly loves the high range of Abby’s voice. Kelly says she loves Abby’s tone and gifts her with her custom Team Kelly jacket.”
