TV academy members will soon be singing the alphabet as ABC Studios has shipped off its 2018 Emmy FYC mailer to the voters. The glossy package highlights 19 original programs across five DVDs, including “Black-ish,” “The Good Doctor” and the well-received “Scandal”/”How to Get Away with Murder” crossover event. If you’re wondering about the recently cancelled “Roseanne” or the Emmy-winning “Modern Family,” they’re not included within the Emmy mailer because ABC Studios is not their production company.
DISC ONE: COMEDY & VARIETY TALK
Four comedy series up for Emmy’s approval are: ABC’s returning “American Housewife,” starring the very pregnant Katy Mixon; ABC’s two-time Best Comedy Series nominee “Black-ish,” which recently tackled marital issues between Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross‘ characters; Freeform’s “Grown-ish,” a “Black-ish” spinoff that follows Yara Shahidi‘s Zoey; and Showtime’s “SMILF,” Golden Globe nominee for creator/star Frankie Shaw. Perennial late-night talker “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” back in contention for the 16th season, rounds out the first DVD.
DISC TWO: DRAMA
First-year medical drama “The Good Doctor” is hoping to contend for Freddie Highmore, who just earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism. “HTGAWM,” starring Emmy and Oscar winner Viola Davis, and “Scandal,” led by Emmy nominee Kerry Washington, are also included on ABC’s first drama disc. Both leading ladies are not just eligible for their own programs, but also for guest-starring on each other’s shows in the crossover event of the year.
