ACM Awards 2018: Will Dierks Bentley (‘Black’) win Video of the Year for the 3rd time in 4 years?

Dierks Bentley has only won three Academy of Country Music Awards since breaking onto the scene 15 years ago.  One of those victories was for New Artist of the Year in 2004, and the other two were for Video of the Year for “Drunk on a Plane” (2015) and “Forever Country” (2017). He’s nominated again this year for “Black,” so can he win this prize for the third time in four years?

“Drunk on a Plane” was a comic video set on a raucous airliner where Bentley played both the pilot and a passenger on the party airliner. “Forever Country” was quite different, and he was far from alone: the video featured dozens of country artists performing a medley of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “On the Road Again” and “I Will Always Love You” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards.

“Black” is a marked departure from both of those. Directed by Max A. Butler, who contends at the ACM Awards for the first time, and Wes Edwards, who previously won for directing “Drunk on a Plane,” the video is focused on elegant cinematography with scenic backdrops, crashing waves, and romance. Such striking imagery could help the video prevail, and Bentley has goodwill with the academy after co-hosting the telecast with Luke Bryan in 2016 and 2017 — Reba McEntire is taking over the emcee duties in 2018.

However, based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have entered their ACM picks in our predictions center thus far, Bentley trails in fourth place with 9/2 odds. “Marry Me” by Thomas Rhett leads the way with 5/4 odds, but there is one user among our All-Star Top 24 who thinks Bentley will pull off an upset. Our All-Stars got the highest scores when you combine ACM predictions from the last two years, so keep their forecasts in consideration when making your own.

Do you think Bentley will surprise the field by winning Video of the Year again?
