ACM Awards 2018: Watch out for Garth Brooks, who could win Entertainer of the Year for the first time in almost 20 years

Garth Brooks has won a remarkable 22 awards from the Academy of Country Music, but only four of those have come in the 21st century, and those were honorary awards. This year he’s got just one nomination, Entertainer of the Year, and he hasn’t won that in 19 years. So what are the chances he’ll win this time? Pretty good, as it turns out.

Brooks has won Entertainer of the Year a remarkable six times (1991-1994, 1998-1999), and on top of that he was also awarded Artist of the Decade in 1999. But he hasn’t won the top category again despite additional bids in 2002, 2015, 2016 and now 2018. But Brooks has been enjoying a career revival in recent years, and he even won Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 2016 and 2017. Also, this wouldn’t be the first time the ACMs awarded a legacy artist in recent years: the 2014 Entertainer prize went to veteran George Strait over younger stars Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and even Taylor Swift.

This year Brooks faces Bryan again, along with Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban and two-time defending champ Jason Aldean. And the race appears to be wide open with our users divided between all five contenders. As of this writing Aldean is the front-runner with leading odds of 3/2 based on the combined forecasts of our hundreds of users, but Brooks is a close second with 5/2 odds.

Brooks has support from some key users. I’m the only one predicting a Brooks victory among the Editors who cover awards year-round, but he’s also backed by 7 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s ACM winners and 7 of our All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ predictions. Are we right that Brooks could prevail again?
