ACM Awards 2018: Will Keith Urban finally win Entertainer of the Year on his 8th try?

The 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards race for Entertainer of the Year is almost too close to call based on the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who are split between all five of the nominees. So in a divided field, could this be the opportunity Keith Urban needs to finally win? He’s nominated for the eighth time, but has yet to prevail.

Urban lost his first three noms (2005-2006, 2008) to Kenny Chesney. Then he was defeated twice by Carrie Underwood (2009-2010) and once by Taylor Swift (2011). Most recently he was taken down by Jason Aldean (2017), who is now the two-time defending champ and a nominee again this year. In 2018 Urban also faces country legend and six-time Entertainer of the Year champ Garth Brooks (1991-1994, 1998-1999), two-time winner Luke Bryan (2013, 2015) and this year’s most nominated artist, Chris Stapleton, who has eight total bids. So on paper it looks like an uphill battle for Urban, who indeed ranks fifth in our predictions with odds of 6/1.

But Urban is no slouch in this year’s nominations with five bids of his own. In addition to the top category he also contends for Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year for “Female” and twice for Vocal Event of the Year as both artist and producer of “The Fighter,” his duet with Underwood. Over the course of his career Urban has been awarded by the ACMs 12 times, so they clearly admire him and may consider him overdue for the top prize. Also, though most of our users aren’t predicting a victory for him, he’s currently backed by one of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s ACM winners: Ladora Eberle, who actually tied for the second-highest predictions accuracy (46.15%) in a ceremony that was filled with upsets.

Do you agree with Eberle that we’re underestimating Urban’s chances of winning?
