Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 24-year-old Ada Vox sang Queen‘s “The Show Must Go On” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This San Antonio, Texas resident auditioned in a previous season as Adam Sanders, but now she’s taking the stage as a drag queen. Was Ada’s performance good enough to send her through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.
“You have no idea how fabulous you are,” shouted Lionel as he gave a standing ovation. “I am telling you, what I love most about you is that you came here tonight to stop the show. I can’t even tell you how proud I am of you. Each time you come, you take us to another level. I’m going to be right here to make sure I see you reach the top. You are on fire, my dear.”
“Not only did you stop the show, you finally started the show, queen,” Katy declared in a slight diss to the other contestants. “I was waiting for someone to show up. It’s exciting to see you spread your wings, obviously. You know how to maneuver the song choice stuff, and I think that’s really important for singers right now.”
Luke added simply, “The biggest voice I ever heard right there. That’s all I gotta say about that. Good job.”
In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson wrote, “This ravishing queen is in diamonds up to her neck and covered in feathers. Yes! I love the drama. As Ada hit the chorus a power kicked in that absolutely slayed everyone so far. Could we actually be witnessing the first drag queen to win ‘American Idol’? Lionel is on his feet!”
