“Dancing with the Stars” just announced on April 13 the 10 athletes who will compete in its special shortened “Athletes” season, and already our users think they know who will win. Though no one has set foot in the ballroom yet, figure skate Adam Rippon is the front-runner to claim the Mirror Ball Trophy with leading odds of 17/10 as of this writing. Do you agree?
Those odds are based on the predictions of Gold Derby users who have entered their picks in our predictions center thus far. But how could there already be such a strong consensus around a contestant when no one has danced yet? Well, just look at the history of the competition. Two figure skaters have won the Mirror Ball in seasons past: Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and Meryl Davis (season 18). And it’s easy to see why. Figure skaters are athletically trained, and their sport gives them plenty of experience with choreography and music that other athletes this season may not have. That means there’s a good chance Rippon will have the skill to rack up high scores from the judges.
It’s often harder to guess who will be fan-favorites on “DWTS,” but that’s crucial since the votes of viewers at home account for half the results. That’s how lower-scoring contestants often make it farther in the competition than expected, and how high-scoring contestants are sometimes eliminated shockingly early. But Rippon has already proven himself to be a fan-favorite thanks to his humor and outgoing personality, both on display when he competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.
However, no male figure skater has won the Mirror Ball Trophy yet. Evan Lysacek finished second is season 10, while Charlie White was ousted in fifth place in season 18. And Rippon’s Olympic BFF and “DWTS” rival Mirai Nagasu is also a figure skater in her prime, so she could give him a run for his money on the dance floor, potentially following Yamaguchi and Davis’s path to victory. Nagasu currently ranks second in our predictions with 9/4 odds.
Do you agree with our early odds? Will another athlete surprise us with their dance prowess and their charm?
