Adam Rippon is the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ front-runner with 2/5 odds, but users can’t agree who will finish 2nd

The Mirror Ball Trophy will be handed out on May 21 on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” ending this special four-week event, and we’re pretty sure we know who will win. Adam Rippon has been the front-runner since before the season even began, and after topping the judges’ leaderboard for three weeks in a row that hasn’t changed. He gets leading odds of 2/5 as of this writing, but our users are less sure of who will place second.

Rippon has had a significant advantage — as do all figure skaters — in that his athletic career prepared him for the choreography, musicality, and artistry of ballroom dancing. In the season premiere he tied football player Josh Norman for the highest judges’ score. Then in week two he tied his Olympic figure skating teammate Mirai Nagasu for the top spot. And in the week-three semifinals he had the top of the leaderboard all to himself while Nagasu was unexpectedly eliminated.

For a while it seemed like Nagasu would be Rippon’s closest competition, so now that she’s no longer in the running does he have an easy path to victory? Maybe not. Norman made the finals too, and four NFL players before him have won the Mirror Ball Trophy, compared to just two figure skaters who have prevailed over the years. And both of the figure skaters who won were women — Kristi Yamaguchi in season 6 and Meryl Davis in season 18 — so maybe it’s surprise finalist Tonya Harding who really has the advantage.

But if we’re right that Rippon will win, who will be the runner-up? Right now our users think it will be Norman, who ranks second in our Mirror Ball predictions with 10/3 odds, followed by Harding in third place with 14/1 odds. Can either of them pull off an upset, or are those two sports stars just fighting for the silver medal?
