Not to oversell it, but Adam Rippon’s freestyle on Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” finale won’t be like any one you’ve seen the past 25 seasons. At least according to Jenna Johnson. “I think we’re gonna do something no one’s really seen on the show before for our freestyle,” she teased to “Entertainment Tonight.”
Is she just being hyperbolic? Probably. But couples’ freestyles have gotten increasingly packed with bells and whistles since the show allowed supersized freestyles in the all-star 15th season. You can add extra dancers and a bunch of high-tech gadgetry that it’s become more about putting on the biggest show than dancing. Remember the early years when it was just the couple dancing? Sigh.
Johnson didn’t reveal anything else about the routine, but we do know they are dancing to “Scooby Doo Pa Pa” by DJ Kass, so it will be an upbeat number. Their first dance is a jazz to “Anything You Can Do” from “Annie Get Your Gun,” which Johnson describes as “really fun” and “playful.”
Frontrunners all season, the two are the heavy favorites to take home the Mirrorball trophy Monday, which will be the first time Johnson has seen Rippon in two days. Because of the “Stars on Ice” tour, which ended Sunday, the pair lost a day of rehearsal every weekend.
“I never get to see Adam on Sundays,” Johnson says. “Basically, I say bye to him Saturday morning and I’m like, ‘See ya! See you on Monday. Hopefully you’ll remember everything.’ So it’s been exhausting, to say the least. I don’t know how he’s doing it. He’s such a champion and a trouper.”
The “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” finale airs Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
