Say what you will about model Alexis Ren and her sudden showmance with her “Dancing with the Stars” pro partner Alan Bersten — and we’ve said plenty — but we shouldn’t forget that she’s also a pretty damn good dancer. She has gotten strong scores all season, but ironically, as her relationship with her partner has become more of a focal point of her candidacy, it has somewhat overshadowed the fact that her dances have gotten better and better too, culminating at the Semi-Finals, where she earned her first ever perfect score and earned a spot in the final four.
All six semifinalists had to perform two dances on Monday night. One was a new routine in a previously unlearned dance style, and the other was a Judges’ Choice dance where the celebs were challenged by one of the judges to improve on a dance style they performed earlier in the season. For Ren, that was the jive.
Bruno Tonioli was the judge who mentored Ren and Bersten for their jive redux and helped them put together a glittery jazzercise concept. With such bright colors and so many troupe members participating, the routine could have been a hectic mess, but Ren took Tonioli’s advice to be a “kick-ass mean girl” to heart and delivered one of her most technically accomplished numbers yet.
Tonioli thought his protege was “brilliant.” Carrie Ann Inaba added that “everything was perfect.” And Len Goodman “loved” the concept as well as her “fabulous” execution. Though Ren had gotten a few 10s for her previous dances — including one for her first Semi-Finals performance — this time she scored straight 10s for a total of 30 out of 30, which was her first perfect score of the season. And she advanced to the finals even though she was called in jeopardy at the end of the night. She has come a long way since week one, when she was one of the bottom five celebs dancing for her life. Of those five she’s the only one who has made it this far. Could she even win the whole thing?
