Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Allison Janney is entering the “Mom” episode “Phone Confetti and a Wee Dingle” as her Emmy submission for Best Comedy Actress. This installment aired May 10 and was the 21st episode of the fifth season for the CBS show. In this segment, Christy (Anna Faris) and her mother Bonnie (Janney) take a relaxing trip to a spa, but it takes a bad turn when Bonnie then lands in jail.
Janney has won for this role twice before in the supporting category in 2014 and 2015. In fact she has seven career victories (also including “The West Wing” and “Masters of Sex”). One more win would tie her for the all-time Emmy record at eight acting trophies in primetime with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The latter has won six straight times in this category for “Veep” but is not eligible in 2018 since her show aired no new episodes.
Instead, Janney will face off against previous champions Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”) and Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”), past nominees Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) and first-timer Issa Rae (“Insecure”).
