Fifteen-year-old singer Amanda Mena, who was Mel B‘s Golden Buzzer pick in her original “America’s Got Talent” audition, returned on Tuesday night during the first live show of 2018. Amanda performed a knock-out rendition of Pink‘s “What About Us” that was a mix of Spanish and English. When rival judge Simon Cowell suggested that the young girl should be in a group, Mel B was adamant that Amanda remain a solo artist. What do YOU think? Mel: “When I say that you remind me of me, I mean as in the story that you didn’t fit in. Everyone told you to go back to your country. You looked different. You didn’t speak the same language. But you know what? You overcame all of those odds and you are here on this stage. And I am so proud of you. And that’s what I mean when I say you remind me of me. I came here 15 years ago and no one could understand a bloody word I said. I’m just saying, the strength that you have and the maturity and the self-belief, I wish I had that at your age. I have that [now] and I’m 43. Finally, thank you, Jesus. Well done to you.”
Heidi Klum: “I think you nailed it. My favorite part is when you let go, when you let loose, when we can feel that you’re having fun. And when you hit those high notes and you show everyone what you do, well done.”
Simon: “I think when Mel gave this girl Amanda the Golden Buzzer, [that] was the best thing that you needed. It was that real vote of confidence and you did the right thing, Mel. This girl, you have the real potential to be a star. I have a feeling you should be in a group going forward, but this is the next step.”
Mel: “Stop. Stop you right there. She’s a solo artist and she will always be one.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty declared, “Next up was Mel’s personal golden buzzer pick Amanda Mena who sang a remixed version of Pink‘s song “What About Us” that incorporated Spanish lyrics as well as English. Though the first verse was a little shaky (let’s chalk it up to nerves), Amanda managed to bring the performance around to a more mature and confident place and hit some big notes toward the end. Simon told Amanda that she is on her way to becoming a star, but suggested that she might want to join a group in the future rather than be solo.”
